Alia Malley
Alia Malley (b. 1973, California, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist working between photography, video, and scent. Her practice examines the shifting relationships between environment, technology, human geography, and what more-than-human systems of knowledge may reveal. Through her scent-based studio Raeta, Malley extends the photographic image into air and atmosphere, treating scent as an invisible form of time-based image-making that engages materiality and perception.
Malley received her BA in Critical Film Studies from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts and her MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California Riverside. From 2020-2025 she held the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor in Humanities and Sciences at Art Center College of Design. Her project Captains of the Dead Sea was published as a One Picture Book with Nazraeli Press in 2020.
Upcoming projects include Thin Places, a collaboration with Julia Holter and Nazraeli Press in 2027. She is also featured in the upcoming Imploration Project, a collaboration with designer Lawrence Azerrad and artist Richelle Ellis, published by DelMonico Books late 2026.
Her work is held in private and public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the UCLA Library Special Collections, and the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection.
She lives and works near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
