Victor Mortales

Víctor Mortales (Oaxaca City, 1985) is a visual artist with a background in linguistics. His artistic practice unfolds multidisciplinarity, encompassing photography, drawing, text, and performative actions. Through the word-idea relationship, he creates works that engage with ephemeral processes and stain-like forms.

He has trained at institutions such as the Academy of San Carlos (UNAM), the International Center of Photography (ICP, New York), the Centro de la Imagen (Mexico City), and the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín (CaSa, Oaxaca). Mortales has been a photography instructor since 2011 and has exhibited his work both in independent spaces and major institutions, including: Museo de la Cancillería (Mexico City), Museo de Arte de Bahía (Brazil), Museo de Arte Moderno de Salvador (Brazil), Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueños (Oaxaca, Mexico).

His book Nivi Ve’e was shortlisted for the 2022 Foto Book Festival Kassel Dummy Award. He participated in Projeto Ativa, an artistic and cultural management residency held at Edificio Coati, the last architectural project designed by Lina Bo Bardi in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. His work is included in collections as the Biblioteca Nacional de México (UNAM) and the INBAL/Toledo Collection.

In 2018, he took part in the Galería del Agua residency in Altzayanca, Tlaxcala, as a member of the Turista Mundial collective, alongside Santiago Rojo. In 2017, he co-founded Casa Garita in Oaxaca, a visual arts space for exhibition and artistic diffusion, together with Alexia Zúñiga.

In 2023, he was awarded the First Solo Exhibition Grant by the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín (CaSa, Oaxaca). In 2024, he completed an artist residency at Art Division in Los Angeles, California.

Victor Mortales currently lives and works in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca.
