Cultural & Curatorial Partnership
2025 Mid-Year Update
We’re halfway through 2025, and the partnership between Hannah Sloan Curatorial & Advisory and satis.FACTORY has already hosted an extraordinary slate of residencies, exhibitions, workshops, and public programs in San José, Costa Rica.
From agroecology and ecofeminism to performance, archives, and collective practice, this year’s programming continues to foster dialogue across disciplines, cultures, and geographies—while supporting artists whose practices push the boundaries of art-making and social engagement.
The partnership supports satis.FACTORY's interdisciplinary mission by funding a dynamic range of initiatives that include exhibitions, performance, educational workshops, community engagement, publications and international artist residencies.

BOCETOS, Tierra Maestra — Mariela Richmond
Artist, educator, and co-programmer of satis.FACTORY, Mariela Richmond explored the intersections of food sovereignty, art education, and ecofeminism.
During the residency, Mariela met with La Red de Mujeres Rurales de Costa Rica, a feminist collective of women from rural parts of the country who resist against seed privatization. Those who came were provided a stipend for food and transportation.
Additionally, she co-hosted the online seminar Dormancias interspecie with Bolivian artist Paulina Oña and presented an Open Studio which showcased her research, drawings, and other materials gathered over the past four years.
We are proud to announce that the work created during Mariela’s residency is now on view at the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo de Costa Rica.
A publication of her residency project Tierra Maestra in collaboration with Nicaragua-based editorial AZETAGUIA, is forthcoming.

satis.FACTORY Casa International Residency — Emilia Yang
Artist, activist, and researcher Emilia Yang (Nic-USA) led workshops with Volcánicas, a collective of exiled and migrant Nicaraguan women, envisioning a feminist and free Nicaragua in 2035.
Over three consecutive Saturdays, Emilia met with Volcanicas to collectively envision “una Nicaragua libre” (a Nicaragua free from dictatorship). These meetings covered a traveling stipend, workshop materials, beverages, and home-cooked meals. The final open studio of Yang’s residency was an energized and emotional event, drawing over 80 attendees, many of whom were from the Nicaraguan community, exiled in Costa Rica.
Emilia also recorded and documented Portal Feministx a la Futura at El Parque de la Paz. For this public action, the artist flew a kite symbolizing a portal to a feminist future in Central America, which called for “community” and a “fight for freedom”.
We are proud to announce that work created during Emilia's residency is now on view at the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo de Costa Rica.

satis.FACTORY Casa International Residency — William Carmago
William Camargo is the current resident at satis.FACTORY casa where he is living, creating, and engaging with the community.
His work, rooted in archival research and performative interventions, explores the imperial and colonial histories of photography while celebrating brownness and challenging visual narratives around Latine identity.
On August 7, Camargo opened a space for dialogue and reflection on “Photography, imperialism and the reimagined canon.” The artist gave a brief history of photography as an imperialist/colonial tool, and dove into a new history of artists of color using the camera to create a counter-history of their communities.
As his residency continues, Camargo is engaging the community in a series of portraits that explore ideas of masculinity. He is also documenting Costa Rica’s monuments while interrogating what they mean, and how they are represented.
On August 28th the community will be invited to his final Open Studio to see the fruits of his month-long residency.
We’re also pleased to share that Camargo’s residency appeared in La Nación this week featuring a conversation between the artist and curator Erika Martin. You can read the article here.
