Hosted by PAC LA on Instagram
Please join PAC LA host Hannah Sloan as she welcomes Santa Fe-based photographer and visual artist, Cara Romero for an Instagram Live event on Friday, September 26th at 11:00 AM PT / 12 PM MT. This event is FREE and open to the public —generously sponsored by the Herb Ritts Foundation.
"My approach fuses time-honored and culturally specific symbols with 21st-century ideas. This strategy reinforces the ways we exist as contemporary Native Americans, all the while affirming that Indigenous culture is continually evolving and imminently permanent."
/ Cara Romero
Cara Romero is a widely exhibited contemporary fine art photographer. An enrolled citizen of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, Romero was raised between contrasting settings: the rural Chemehuevi reservation in Mojave Desert, CA and the urban sprawl of Houston, TX.
Romero’s identity informs her photography, a blend of fine art and editorial photography, shaped by years of study and a visceral approach to representing Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural memory, collective history, and lived experiences from a Native American female perspective.
Since 1998, Romero’s expansive oeuvre has been informed by formal training in film, digital, fine art and commercial photography. By staging theatrical compositions infused with dramatic color, Romero takes on the role of storyteller, using contemporary photography techniques to depict the modernity of Native peoples, illuminating Indigenous worldviews and aspects supernaturalism in everyday life.
During this Instagram Live session, the artist will guide us on a rare, behind-the scenes look at her New Mexico studio space, where layered tableaux photographs are brought to life.
